Discover Bogotá's Cerros Orientales on a scenic hike. Learn about native species and conservation efforts.

  • Explore Bogotá's wilderness with expert guidance
  • Marvel at city vistas from Moyas
  • Learn about biodiversity

Bogotá rests upon an expansive savannah, nestled amidst the eastern Andean mountain range at an elevation of 2600 meters above sea level (MAMSL). While much of the city is relatively flat, its eastern boundary is defined by the awe-inspiring Cerros Orientales, a majestic mountain range that spans Bogotá's territory from south to north. This rugged terrain not only offers stunning visual scenery but also significantly influences Bogotá's climate. Despite their constant presence, these hills remain largely unexplored by both locals and visitors. Thanks to efforts spearheaded by residents of surrounding neighborhoods, the local administration has taken steps to open up and connect several hiking trails, providing citizens with the opportunity to uncover one of the capital's most precious natural treasures. Embark on this tour by starting early at the designated meeting point, located at the city's outskirts. Your journey will lead you on a hike reaching approximately 3,100 meters above sea level (masl). Here, amidst the unique 'paramo' vegetation characteristic of the Andean Highlands, you'll pause at Moyas, a collection of stone formations offering sweeping vistas of Bogotá and the expansive forest reserve stretching eastward. Throughout the hike, your guide will offer insights into the competition between native and invasive species, as well as the environmental challenges confronting Bogotá. Following this invigorating hike, your guide will accompany you on foot to Bogotá's G Zone, where you'll have the option to recharge at various cafes or restaurants or arrange transportation to your hotel or onward destination. It's important to note that the hike is of moderate difficulty, covering a distance of 3 kilometers each way, with an elevation gain of 550 meters. Ensure you've spent at least 36 hours in Bogotá to acclimate to the altitude, and come prepared with hiking shoes, a raincoat, drinking water, and snacks, as there are no amenities available within the reserve.
