Following pick-up from your hotel in Bogotá, journey to the Zipaquirá Salt Cathedral and experience one of the finest achievements of Colombian architecture. Built inside the depths of the biggest salt rock reserve on earth, Zipaquirá Salt Cathedral is mystical place where the pre-Columbian Muisca culture, environment and religious patrimony combine. This splendid work of art and engineering opened to the public in 1995. Enter an old salt mine that has been adapted to function as a cathedral, and marvel at the icons, ornaments and architectural details hand carved in the halite rock by various artists and sculptors. Be mesmerized by the amazing lighting effects that illuminate original interpretations of Catholic symbols, and learn about the system of symbols behind these works of art from your guide. Then, exit the salt mine and go to the colonial village of Zipaquirá to take a walk through the main square. See the historic buildings that are national monuments throughout Colombia. Get some free time to taste the delicious baked goods of the region and visit the local handicraft market before you return to Bogotá.
