Description
Cartagena de Indias is rightly called the 'Pearl of the Caribbean' and is considered
the most beautiful colonial city in South America. It owes this reputation to its magnificent old town
with colonial flair and its wonderful location on the Caribbean coast.
The city was founded by the conquistador Pedro de Heredia in 1533. Cartagena
quickly developed into the most important port and trading city for silver,
precious stones, and gold for the Spanish crown. The monopoly on the
slave trade made Cartagena one of the richest cities in the Caribbean. Today,
Cartagena de Indias has approximately 1.1 million inhabitants and is the most visited city
in Colombia.
You will learn a lot about the history of the colonial era and experience the vibrant life and
South American joie de vivre up close. Cartagena has a well-developed tourist infrastructure. On my tours, you will also visit squares and
stately houses with beautiful courtyards that are rarely seen on
standard tours.
The 'Centro Historico,' a treasure trove of Spanish colonial architecture
The Centro Historico, largely surrounded by an imposing city wall,
with its colorful, lively streets, is one of the highlights of a Caribbean trip
and a must-see on a shore excursion in Cartagena. It is easy for everyone to see
why Cartagena de Indias was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984
. The center is very well maintained and the variety of colors of the colonial
houses in colonial style is admirable. The historical significance of the
city is another reason why it has been awarded this coveted title. In addition to
churches, monasteries, cathedrals, and palaces, there are picturesque squares where
many impressive buildings can be admired. Stately villas, where
wealthy merchants and noble families lived during the colonial era, have been beautifully
restored and now house elegant hotels. Small shops are perfect for
browsing and picking up a beautiful souvenir or two to take home.
We tailor our tours to the wishes of our guests and they are not limited
to the well-known highlights of the city. Along the way, we have
the opportunity to try a refreshing juice made from exotic fruits and a small
treat from one of the numerous street stalls. As tour guides throughout
Colombia, we are also on the road and can tell you a lot about the history of
this multifaceted country.
