Best for a family weekend activities in Cartagena Colombia
Handpicked by a Local Expert
At our Wayuu Backpack Workshop in Bogotá, participants will learn about this traditional product's significance in Colombian culture and create their own bags to take home.
The workshop begins at 2 pm at The Cranky Croc Hostel, followed by a walk to the historic center of Bogotá. Along the way, we will stop at a café to enjoy a traditional drink while discussing indigenous communities from North Colombia and the symbolic meaning of the Wayuu backpack in Colombian culture.
Next, we will visit the workshop of a Wayuu craftswoman from La Guahira, where she will demonstrate the weavings and patterns used in creating backpacks with a crochet technique introduced by Spanish conquistadors. This product is entirely Colombian, providing economic support to many indigenous families.
With guidance from the craftswoman, participants will design their own miniature backpacks, following a Colombian tradition tied to the legend of Wale' Kerü, the weaver spider.
At the conclusion of the workshop, each participant will receive a souvenir backpack and keychain made with Wayuu weaving patterns. The event will wrap up around 5 pm at the backpack tent.
