Description
Discover the authentic soul of Cartagena on this immersive, shared tour that seamlessly blends the city's dramatic history with its vibrant Caribbean food and literary culture. Learn about enslavement, pirates, battles, and independence while exploring the city's secrets, customs, and popular legends—including the magical realism of Gabriel García Márquez and his ties to the region.
- The adventure begins with colonial history at the iconic Clock Tower (Torre del Reloj), the 'Golden Key of Cartagena.' From a rooftop overlooking the plaza, we'll cover the early colonial past while you savor the traditional empanada with aji sauce.
- We immediately immerse ourselves in local flavor at the famous Portal de Los Dulces, where you will enjoy free samples (at street vendor's discretion) sweet snacks and treats native to the region, with full explanations of each item.
- Next, we cover the grand Plaza de la Aduana, discussing the Municipal Hall and other key historic buildings that define the miscegenation of the Caribbean coast. Depending on the season, you may also encounter local food and souvenir markets here.
- We then cover the areas around the Museum of Cartagena de Indias and the Naval Caribbean Museum. Here, we discuss the intense eras of indigenous life, pirates, major naval battles, and the fight for independence. Note that we provide previews of the museums, but do not enter; you may continue your exploration after the tour concludes.
- The cultural journey continues at a traditional local restaurant where you will receive a complimentary welcome drink made with native Colombian fruits.
- We then visit the major chapels and churches in Cartagena, discussing their significance to the local faith of the population.
- You will then indulge in an ice cream tasting featuring more Colombian fruits with a water or milk base.
- Before continuing, we stop at a unique local cafe for a traditional coffee tasting accompanied by canela (cinnamon).
- The tour moves to the vibrant cultural heart of the city: Getsemaní. We explore one of its most important and colorful cultural corridors, admiring the famous graffiti art and unique architecture. While in Getsemaní, we dive into the process of chocolate and cacao creation with a dedicated chocolate tasting.
- The experience culminates at a specialty rum distillery, where you will enjoy a final chocolate tasting accompanied by a local rum shot.
