Description

On the Trail of the Spectacled Bear and the White-Tailed Deer: An Immersion in Chingaza Exploring the heart of the Andes is much more than a hike; it is an in-depth study of a vital ecosystem. As you embark on this journey, it is essential to understand the elusive nature of wildlife. It should be noted that sightings of the South American spectacled bear have been chance encounters and not planned in advance; unfortunately, the Andean bear population is small, which means that the number of sightings is lower. For this reason, our expedition moves away from conventional tourism to become an experience of biological interpretation, where the true star is the habitat that supports these species. On this tour of the Chingaza National Natural Park, the experience focuses on “reading the forest.” Given the difficulty of a direct encounter, we become trackers: the presence of the spectacled bear will be reconstructed indirectly based on the physical signs it leaves in its wake. We will learn to identify their paw prints on the moist moorland soil and the scratches on trees, deep marks that reveal their strength and their movement routes. We will analyze territorial marking, a form of chemical and physical communication essential for the species’ survival, and we will look for bear beds, structures that bears build using branches and vegetation, both on the ground and in the treetops, for rest and protection. The biology of the bear, or Tremarctos ornatus, is also revealed through its feeding habits. Along the trail, we will identify feeding sites for puyas and bromeliads, where the bear uses its dexterity to reach the nutritious core of these plants. The presence of the “Guardian of the Moors” is further confirmed by the discovery of hairs on tree bark and in feces, key evidence that biologists use to study the bear's diet and the health of the population. As we decipher these tracks, we will also keep an eye out for the white-tailed deer, a more visible but equally majestic inhabitant that often appears amidst the mist and the frailejones. This hike near Bogotá offers a unique opportunity to understand why this bear, whose sense of smell is seven times more powerful than that of a dog, is considered the architect of the Andean forests. Following the trail of these animals means recognizing the fragility of their home and the importance of our responsible presence. We invite you to walk with respect, sharpen your senses, and discover the secrets that the mountains hold for those who know how to observe. Come along on this expedition of citizen science and connection with nature in the high mountains of Colombia!
