Description
Check out the Bogotá Gold Museum, right in the heart of the city's historic center. It's got the biggest collection of pre-Hispanic goldsmithing in the world, with around 34,000 pieces of gold and tumbaga, and about 25,000 objects made of ceramic, stone, shell, bone, and textiles. These pieces come from 13 indigenous cultures that lived in what's now Colombia, including the Muiscas, Quimbayas, Zenúes, Tayronas, Calima, Tumaco, Tolima, Tierradentro, San Agustín, Nariño, Chocó, Urabá, and Malagana.
Featured Exhibitions
The museum tour is split into four themed floors:
Second floor: Check out the 'Metalworking' room, which shows off the mining and manufacturing techniques of ancient metallurgy, and the 'People and Gold in Pre-Hispanic Colombia' room, which explains how gold was used in the political and religious setups of indigenous cultures.
Third floor: It's got the 'Cosmology and Symbolism' room, which dives into mythical themes, shamanism, and the symbolism of metals, and the 'The Offering' room, which takes visitors on a journey into the world of offering ceremonies.
Fourth floor: It's got an interactive room that gets you thinking about the diversity and meaning of the heritage the museum preserves.
Iconic ✨ Pieces
Poporo Quimbaya: A ceremonial piece used by the Quimbayas for the ritual consumption of coca leaves. Made around 301 BC, it's seen as one of the biggest achievements in Colombian pre-Hispanic art.
Balsa Musica: It's all about the ritual that sparked the legend of El Dorado. It shows the Zipa covered in gold dust, sailing on a raft in the Guatavita lagoon, along with his people.
